| Corso Umberto | Piazza Margherita |
Olbia Town is in practice a gateway for north east Sardinia rather than a tourist location itself. The ferry port is about 1km from town and the airport about 5km. Walking into Olbia from the port area the main shopping street is Corso Umberto which takes you to Piazza Margherita. There are two notable churches in the oldest part of the town in Piazza Civitas is the 18th century Chiesa di San Paulo on the site of previous Phoenician and Roman temples. From an earlier church is a 7th century wooden pulpit and other artefacts. A short walk out of the centre (beyond the railway line is Olbia's finest remaining historic building the early 12th century Romanesque Basilica di San Simplicio.

| Golfo Aranci Coast | Porto Rotondo |
Heading north of Olbia is Golfo Aranci, in practice the centre is really just another ferry terminal from the mainland but the coast from Olbia is attractive. Beyond lies Porto Rotondo which, although technically not part of the "Costa Smeralda", exhibits in its attractive harbour the trappings of major wealth. It is also where Silvio Berlusconi built his 27 room summer villa "La Certosa" complete with 400 seat greek style amphitheatre. If you get an invite in for a drink you'll be in important company: guests have included George Bush, Tony and Cherie Blair, Vladimir Putin and Boris Johnson.
